New London Police Play in Honor of Officer Raheem Carter

Groton- The New London Police Department's flag football team, sponsored this year by New London's Police Union (Local 724) participated in the 3rd Annual Raheem A. Carter Memorial Flag Football tournament. This tournament not only honors New London Police Officer Raheem Carter, but proceeds from the team entries benefit the R.A.C. Scholarship fund. This years tournament was held on Saturday July 25th, 2009 at the Poquonock Plains Park in Groton, CT.
New London PD's flag football team consisted of head coach Brian Laurie, Kyle Gorra, Justin Clachrie, Chris White and Matt Galante. Teams were required to play six on both offensive and defensive series, so a big thank you goes out to former Temple University college football player Collin Clancy (friend of J. Clachrie) who filled in a roster spot for Team New London. Team New London a.k.a. Team "IRONMAN" on this date played 40 minutes straight while it's opponent was able to substitute fresh players in on offense and defense. Needless to say Team New London didn't fare well, (ye old one and done in the tourney) but here are some quick notes on the team. QB Laurie threaded the needle with some great throws and New London's only touchdown pass of the day. Gorra, Clachrie and White went all out as usual and Clancy showed why he was college football material. Hats off to New London's opponent, which played a great game.
No matter the outcome of the game it was a huge success for all involved. (Again no injuries sustained by NLPD personnel, which is always a good thing) Above all else the memory of our Brother Officer Raheem A. Carter was honored and money was raised for a great cause. Thank yous go out to those that played, Chief Ackley and other fans for their support at the game, Marie Freiss-McSparren (co-owner of Wings and Pies) for her support and photography, Local 724 for the sponsorship and a big thank you to Raashad Carter + the rest of Raheem's family for organizing this great event and including us year after year.
